PSU Kicks off Fall Semester with New International Student Orientation

Pittsburg State University welcomed students from 21 different countries across the globe in the Fall 2021 intake.

To prepare them for success in their first semester at Pitt State, the new international students attended a New International Student Orientation the week before the start of the Fall semester classes. The Orientation, which ran from Aug. 10 to Aug. 13, provided students with relevant insights into college life and Pitt State through small-group activities, informational sessions, meetings with academic advisors, and ended with enrollment for all students. Serving as a student’s official introduction to Pitt State, the Orientation Program also served as a time for students to have fun, meet new people, and learn about the campus and community with free meals provided by various campus and community organizations.

“I loved each and every thing during the whole orientation,” said Saatvik Sabarwal, of India, a freshman in Computer Information Systems. “(I) got to learn many new things about the university as well as about Pittsburg.”

Student Celebrates Completion of IEP After Span of 14 Years

Sister Rosie Linda, of Mexico, successfully completed Pitt State’s Intensive English Program (IEP) this past summer. Linda initially began the program in 2007, and has been in the program intermittently as she has traveled for missionary work.

Linda said the program “is amazing.”

Completing the program, 14 years after beginning, was a dream come true for Linda and she felt proud to finish.

“I feel so great and happy,” she said. “I feel like now I can do more and I feel confident to do that now. In the beginning, the goal was just to speak and try to communicate with others in a simple way. Now, I can understand more and feel more comfortable to communicate with others.”

PSU Collaborates with Casa de la MĂşsica in Chile for Virtual Chior Performance
In a collaboration with Casa de la MĂşsica in Chile, PSU's chior performed Kyrie from Franz Schubert's  Mass in G. The collaboration began after Maxiel Marchant, choral director in Fruitillar, Chile, reached out to Susan Marchant, PSU Department of Music Chair. After discussing their respective programs, they began exploring options for cooperation- eventually deciding on making a virtual chior recording.

Both chiors rehearsed the piece, and then each chior member made an individual recording for their chorus part. Susan Marchant worked with the original orchestral accompaniment to make an arrangement for the organ, which she then recorded for everyone's use. Maxiel Marchant served as soprano soloist in the work.

"We are really delighted to have had this opportunity to collaborate with our new friends in Chile, and we look forward to additional projects in the years ahead," Susan Marchant said.
