PSU's international students proudly represent their countries during Pitt State Homecoming Parade
Pittsburg State University celebrates the beginning of a new academic year with various Homecoming events and celebrations each Fall semester. International students at Pitt State had the opportunity to represent their countries during the parade by walking with their flags. They were able to share the diverse and multicultural student body that Pitt State boasts.
Pitt State students share in traditional Fall activities
The Pitt Pal Program, which matches international and domestic students to promote cultural exchange and assist new international students in their transition to PSU, hosted a Fall Fiesta event. The event was a time for students to participate in traditional fall activities such as pumpkin carving and roasting smores. For many, it was their first time carving a pumpkin.
Pitt State's Indian Student Association celebrates Diwali with Pittsburg community
Last month, the Indian Student Association (ISA) at Pittsburg State University celebrated Diwali, the Festival of Lights, with over 250 Pitt State and Pittsburg community members. The celebration took place in the Bicknell Family Center for the Arts for a performance portion of the event, and the Plaster Center for a food portion.

"We celebrated the same way the way you celebrate in our home country," said Akash Verma, ISA President. "We had performances, we had authentic Indian food, and after all those we had a firework show."

The event was a success due to hard work from the ISA and to the support they received for the event.

"We really appreciate our Pittsburg state University for letting us have this event on campus," Verma said. "Not only the University, but our local businesses also helped us to sponsor our event."
Pittsburg State University welcomes guest conductor and pianist from Russia and Italy
The Southeast Kansas Symphony at Pittsburg State University opened their first concert of the season with "From Russia With Love", which featured two international guests. Guest conductor Vladimir Gorbik from the Tchaikowsky Moscow State Conservatory in Russia, and pianist Luigi Borzillo, from Italy traveled to the heart of the U.S.A. to perform in the Bicknell Family Center for the Arts.

"It was wonderful to conduct The Southeast Kansas Symphony, to perform in such an excellent concert hall as Bicknell Family Center of Art," Gorbik said. "I thank Maestro Raul Munguía for his invitation to perform a Russian symphonic program at the concert with such a beautiful name 'From Russia with Love' in the center of the United States."

Gorbik wanted to bring a Russian orchestral style of playing to Pittsburg, and he was able to do so by working with the SEK Symphony.

"All of the players of The Southeast Kansas Symphony are very deep musicians and kind people," Gorbic said. "I like to work on Russian scores with them."

Two weeks later, Gorbic was again able to bring Russian music to the Pittsburg community by performing with Music of the Continents International Choir, a program of Russian sacred music.

Family from Mexico finds second home at Pittsburg State University
Transitioning to a new country with a different language and culture is no easy feat. It is, however, a little easier to make the transition with your family.

This was true for Isaac Hernandez, his wife, Frida Herrera, and their son Emiliano “Emi”, who moved to Pittsburg from Mexico City, Mexico this semester.

They had a feeling that Pitt State would be a welcoming university for a family began before they even left Mexico.

“I think we received that impression since we were in Mexico, we didn’t have to stay here to see that friendly and welcoming and kind people from here..,” Hernandez said. “Then when we came, it was the same- or even bigger. It’s kind of hard to go to another place. Especially another country with another language and maybe different cultures or traditions… being here we really feel like we are not too far from our home. We are having a really great experience with all people.”

Pittsburg State University’s Automotive Department boasts an extremely unique program. The Caterpillar ThinkBIGGER program at PSU has been the only program of its kind worldwide since its inception in 2001.

This semester, the program received their first in-person international student. Juan Cavero, of Peru, arrived in August with his family to study in the program, having completed the Caterpillar ThinkBIG program in 2004 at the Tecsup Technological Institute in Lima.

“…I heard about the option of being able to continue my studies at Pittsburg State University,” Cavero said. “At that time, it seemed like a dream to be able to come to the United States, study at PSU, and have the possibility of being able to work for Caterpillar.”
