International students prepare for new country, new semester

They’re welcomed by a big crimson and gold flag and representatives of the Office of International Programs & Studies, then head to Pittsburg to get acclimated to life in the U.S. with the help of several days of orientation activities.

“It's an exciting time for them and for us,” said Aaron Hurt, director of International Programs & Studies. “We love the diversity that our international students bring to campus, and the friendships we forge with them while they’re here that wind up being lifelong connections.”

Hurt is anticipating about 70 new students from 18 countries to attend PSU this semester as undergraduate, graduate, Intensive English, and exchange students in a range of disciplines: Art, Accounting, Business Administration, Computer Information Systems, Management, Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry, International Business, English, Nursing, Materials Science, Social Work, Communication, Psychology, Engineering Technology, and Technology in Automotive, Technology Management, and Information Technology and the Intensive English Program.

Pitt State welcomes first student from partner university, TTPU
This semester is an important one for Pittsburg State University’s partnership with Turin Polytechnic University in Tashkent (TTPU) as PSU welcomes the
first student from TTPU to campus. Jasburbek Avazbek has come as part of Pitt State and TTPU's MOU, and is pursuing a Master of Science in Technology.

“We are so excited to have Jasburbek from TTPU and are looking forward to receiving more high-quality students for our partnership,” said Aaron Hurt, director
of international programs and services at PSU. “Our work for the partnership with TTPU is coming fruition with his arrival, and we are excited for a long and successful partnership with TTPU.”

Avazbek said he is excited to be the first student from TTPU to arrive at PSU, after hearing about the dual degree program from his professor. He said he is
grateful to professors at TTPU like Khankeldiyev Khasan, head of the international relations department, for their support and encouragement during his preparations for coming to Pittsburg.

“I was the first student from this project, and I think it’s a very amazing for me even it’s a new country, new people, new culture but I like it,” he said. “The people are so hospitable, the professors also have a good degree, and good experience and the most important thing is that they always try to support students if I have some problem, without any hesitation I ask them and they always welcome to help and to teach them.”

PSU Alumnus O. Daniel Ayala releases first album, ‘Sugestión’

Pitt State alumnus, O. Daniel Ayala, of Paraguay, has released his first album as both composer and pianist.

“It feels great (to release my album),” he said. “I'm very happy with the result, I believe the material is solid and all musicians involved in the project are great professionals.”

Ayala graduated from Pittsburg State University in 2013 with a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance, and said his time at PSU was “crucial” in his development as a musician.

“I'm very grateful to have worked and learned from the amazing faculty in the music department, Dr. Reena Berger, Dr. John Ross, Dr. Marchant, Mr. Bob Kehle, to name a few, but really, everybody,” he said. “I graduated in 2013…and I've gravitated towards a totally different path since then, but I really don't see this album possible today without the education I received there.”

Happy Retirement, Cherlyn Ingram!
After an amazing 27 years of service in Pittsburg State University's Intensive English Program, Cherlyn Ingram has retired from her position as an instructor in the program. Cherlyn specialized in teaching writing, though she taught every skill at almost every level.

"Cherlyn cared deeply about her students and IEP," said Paige Cortes, IEP Coordinator. "She was a consummate professional who did her best each day to help students improve their English language skills. Anyone who has ever taught writing knows that it can be very challenging. Cherlyn did a magnificent job as any of her students would tell you. Cherlyn also was a genius at organizing and contributed greatly to IEP's initial and ongoing accreditation efforts."

Throughout her years at Pitt State, Cherlyn has left a positive impact on the lives of students, faculty, and staff alike. She will be greatly missed, but we wish her a happy and well-deserved retirement. #OAGAAG
Pitt State Intensive English Program welcomes new instructor
We are delighted to welcome a new instructor to our wonderful team! Liddia Graves is joining us as an Assistant Instructional Professor and will be teaching our writing/grammar courses across all three levels, and is working with us for two of our online four-week programs.

Liddia is a current graduate student at Pittsburg State University working on her master's in Teaching English for Speakers of Other Languages. She is alumna of the University of Tennessee Knoxville with a B.A. in Latin American Studies and Spanish Hispanic Studies, and an alumni of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth with an M.A. in Portuguese Studies. She also spent time studying in São Paulo, Brazil during her undergrad.

"Most of all, I am over the moon to be back in the classroom teaching again," Liddia said. "I am excited to take that knowledge of not only being a foreign language student myself but also teaching a foreign language, and apply it to teaching students whose native language is not English! The linguist in me lives for this type of opportunity, and I am grateful for my wonderful colleagues and professors who have given me this chance for new adventures!"
We're so excited to have you, Liddia! #OAGAAG
