PSU students journey to Europe in first faculty-led study abroad trip in two years

Faculty-led study abroad trips are a popular option for Pittsburg State University students to take advantage of study abroad opportunities at PSU, and travel for a few weeks with a group of students led by a faculty member.

Over PSU’s Spring Break in March, group of 37 Pitt State students, six community members, and three faculty journeyed to Europe in the first faculty-led study abroad trip in two years, since the start of the pandemic.

It was so great to be able to travel again,” said Craig Fuchs, Honors College Director, who led the trip. We have been trying to do this trip for years, so I was so excited for the students to finally be able to realize their dream of going abroad.

During the trip, the group visited Rome, Florence, and Paris; spending time at major landmarks and historical sites.

Global Gorillas win awards in elite advertising competition
Pittsburg State University prides itself on providing students a hands-on learning experience. Students have the opportunity to use the skills they learn in class to work on projects and research that display their knowledge of their field in a practical way.

Students from Pittsburg State University’s Graphics and Imaging Technology (GIT) and Communication departments had the opportunity to showcase their skills in their field by submitting projects to the elite advertising competition, the ADDYs.

This year, a total of 66 PSU students competed, with 49 total wins 47 from the GIT Department and two from the Department of Communication. Among them was Abdalrahman Jarwan, of Jordan, who won a Silver ADDY award for making a 2D advertisement video.

Jarwan submitted a project he made for his class, Web and Motion Graphics, for an animation illustrator award.Jarwan believes the awards won by PSU students is a testament to PSU’s strong academic programs.

“The classes in general help me because for the design I used illustrator, I combined the skills from all my classes for my project,” he said.

PSU international students to benefit from social work student’s senior project

Each year, social work students in their final year at Pittsburg State University must carry out a community project for the class Advanced Social Work as part of the class curriculum. Students are expected to choose a social issue that they would like to address and assist with for the project.

This year, international students will be the focus on one senior’s project. Nyasha ‘Amanda’ Makunike, of Zimbabwe, chose to create a project to help meet the needs of international students at PSU by assisting them in finding household necessities and furniture once they arrive in Pittsburg.

According to Makunike, her project is demonstrating the warmth and kindness of the Pittsburg community, and how it can help international students.

“I hope to see Internationals being a lot more forthcoming in difficulties because they know that there will always be someone who will be willing to assist them,” she said. “The Pittsburg Community is so welcoming and loving and we are immensely blessed to be able to be a part of this community.”

Roger Wen, of Taiwan, received the University of Missouri (Mizzou) College of Education & Human Development's Alumni Professional Achievement. Wen is the founder and Senior Director of the online campus at California State University East Bay, he is also the director of their College of Education Master's program in E-Learning.

Before studying at Mizzou, Wen earned two degrees at Pittsburg State University. He earned his undergraduate degree in Business Administration, and a Master of Science in Human Resource Development. We also celebrate his success as an alumnus of PSU!

Wen was happy to receive the award.

"The more I learn the less I know the more I appreciate," he said. "I appreciate everyone of the schools I have attended, especially mentors from various programs that I have studied from. At PSU, I am so grateful that I met Dr. Jesse Hudson, Dr. Mark Johnson, and other wonderful professors who see the potential in me and are willing to challenge me and take me to the next level and continue to be my mentor even until today."

Wen remembers PSU fondly as the place where he met his wife, and as a university with a charming campus and caring faculty. He is grateful for his time at Mizzou as well, and credits his education at both institutions for helping him earn the award.

"What I have learned from the Human Resources Development program actually benefited me the most in terms of preparation for the Ph.D. program and my career," Wen said. "I am really honored to be a lifetime alumni for both PSU and MU but some of that definitely is what PSU and MU have done to me as an educated person."
