Students study PSU Speech Communication class in Paraguay

The PSU in Paraguay program brought PSU class 'Speech Communication' to the PSU classroom at CPK in Asunción, Paraguay. Students in the course were given an understanding of the requirements for effective speaking and listening and an opportunity to increase skills in each.

Magali Paredes
"The Paraguay program brings us closer to excellent professionals and tools to succeed academically. Besides, we learn about the American academic system, so we will be more prepared when times of moving our hometown to finish education come."
Giorgio Soto
“What I liked the most about the program was the environment. Always talking about interesting topics and everyone were thinking and telling their opinion to start a debate, was really educational sharing knowledge with each other. I’m really grateful.”

Renato Soverina
"My favorite part of the class was how hands-on it was. I really managed to practice the techniques taught in class and that allowed me to internalize them."
Diego Martinez
"My favorite aspect of the program is that both the academic staff and the students are eager to make the program effective and fun."
The PSU in Paraguay program held a couple other classes after Speech Communication, and had a large number of students from the Speech class join for the next two:
  • Operations Management
  • General Literature
Upcoming classes include:
  • General Psychology (June 6-24, 2022)
  • World History from 1500 (July 4-24, 2022)

Student from PSU Intensive English Program wins HOSA dental terminology event

Pamela Márquez, of Mexico, competed against other college students in the HOSA - Future Health Professionals event “Dental Terminology”. When the results came back, Márquez received first place in the State of Kansas, and scored above the international average for the event.

The first-place award alone is impressive, and to add to Márquez’s notable win is that she is completed the difficult event as a student in Pitt State’s Intensive English Program (IEP).

“For this event, she had to take an online test with questions about the different roots, words, and phrases used in dentistry,” said Hannah Eckstein, HOSA Vice President. “This is a very difficult event, and to add to the difficulty, it was all in English.”

Joining HOSA, and becoming one of the founding members of the chapter at PSU, has been exciting for Márquez.

“I come to Pitt State because I wanted to improve my English, and also get involved in groups focus in my professional area,” she said. “I found that HOSA exist in Pitt State, and I thought that being part of this Association will help me in my professional career in the USA.”

Kansans and Paraguayans connect for English conversations through
‘Give-back’ program

For four weeks, students from several Kansas universities met with Paraguayans on Zoom every Saturday for an hour to discuss various topics in an English conversation ‘Give-Back’ program.

Leila Lesme, of Paraguay, studied at Pittsburg State University through the BECAL scholarship program in the Spring 2021 semester. As a recipient of the prestigious scholarship, she had the opportunity to in turn help others through a ‘Give-Back’ program. She drew from her own experiences as a student to create the idea for her ‘Give-Back’.

“To receive my scholarship, I went through many interviews/speeches and in that process, I was a bit afraid about my English level,” she said. “Even when I was already at PSU, I was a little shy about my accent or making some grammatical mistakes when speaking, so I thought that this could be very useful to people that feel the same way I did.”

Lesme thought the opportunity to create a program would be a good way to help Paraguayan students to interact more with native English speakers and learn about American culture.
